Rather than remove the new shower I'd just fitted, I left it there and installed a new front panel to the new shower, as the path of least resistance to getting back up and running. Regrettably I did cut off the plastic pipe that connects via compression fitting to 15mm copper inlet (as I needed the fitting / thought the shower was scrap).
